Hens and roosters feel like obvious fairy tale animals to me, though it turns out there are very few stories specifically about them. I associate them with domestic magick and witches without knowing where the association comes from. Henwives and Goose Girls might be one source, Baba Yaga’s chicken-footed hut might be another. These didn’t feel sufficient all by themselves, so I did some digging. The above quote comes from a rich source I found about the symbolism of chickens in Bulgarian folklore, and it ultimately inspired this piece.
