Armed with both his katana and wakizashi, this Japanese Paul Bunyan moves through the forest at night, cleaving trees with the assistance of playful and sly rat spirits.
This is a special painting to me because it’s the first personal piece I let myself spend a long time drawing. Over the course of a year I drew and redrew this man, all the while discovering my own influences. In this one piece you can see American tall tales, Chinese mythology, Japanese folklore, and even hunky male bodies. Speaking of hunks, Paul is modeled after my husband who remains a tall pillar of support and encouragement.
